Different Forms of Electrolytes

Name Magnesium Potassium Sodium Calcium
Re-Lyte Hydration Malate & Glycinate Citrate Redmond’s Pink Real Salt Carbonate
Ultima Citrate Aspartate Sodium Chloride Ascorbate
This table looks at the different forms of electrolytes from each brand.

The top 3 electrolytes you will hear that we need most in keto are sodium, potassium, and magnesium. We must replenish these with food or through a supplement.

On a side note, most Americans are not getting enough magnesium in their diets.

The Difference between Potassium Aspartate and Potassium Citrate

Potassium citrate is used to stop kidney stones that can happen if someone has gout. It’s also used to treat kidney stones. Potassium citrate also alkalizes urine (source).

Potassium aspartate may increase mineral levels in your body, however, there is no solid research on this (source). It has been shown to have positive effects on brain pressure after a traumatic event to the brain (source).

The Difference between Magnesium Glycinate and Malate and Citrate

Magnesium glycinate has been found to help those who are dealing with cardiovascular diseases, inflammatory diseases, and diabetes. It even helps the quality of sleep and neurological functions (source).

Magnesium malate has been found to help the following conditions, Alzheimer’s disease, type 2 diabetes, osteoporosis, headaches and migraines, fibromyalgia, and other related conditions (source).

Magnesium citrate is easy to obtain and relatively inexpensive. This one also may help with sleep. If you consume too much of this form you will experience loose stool though (source).

All of these forms of magnesium are easily absorbed.

The Difference Between Calcium Carbonate and Calcium Ascorbate

Calcium Carbonate proves beneficial in boosting the calcium levels within our bodies. Furthermore, its utilization extends to aiding in conditions arising from excessive stomach acid production. (source).

Calcium ascorbate is a form of vitamin C with calcium in it (source 1) (source 2). It is also utilized for addressing vitamin C deficiency and supporting growth and overall well-being (source 3).

Prices Per Serving

When I’m looking at getting supplements, price is a major factor in my discussion. I have this table below on the price per serving and then another table on the price per electrolyte.

Name Price Servings Price/Serving
Re-Lyte Hydration $41.99 60 $0.70
Ultima $44.99 (1) 90 $0.50
When you subscribe to Re-Lyte or use my KKN15 code the price is $35.69. The discount will bring the $/serving to $0.59.

Price Per Electrolyte

Re-Lyte Hydration $0.84 $0.10 $0.05
Ultima $0.45 $0.18 $0.82

What are the benefits of Redmond Re-Lyte?

One benefit of Redmond’s Re-Lyte is that it’s formulated with experts to include a 2:1 sodium-to-potassium ratio, plus magnesium, chloride, calcium, and the 60+ trace minerals from Real Salt. (The Unflavored variety does not have calcium.)

Another great benefit of Redmond’s Re-Lyte Hydration mix is that it’s easier to mix compared to their previous Re-Lyte Electrolyte powder.

The new formula has the same amounts of electrolytes, 0 carbs per serving, and still no junk with great flavor.

Are There Single-Serve Sticks for Re-Lyte Hydration and Ultima?

Yes, there are single-serve packets for both of these brands.

Why I Like Re-Lyte Hydration More than Ultima

  • I would rather consume the form of magnesium in Relyte compared to the kind in Ultima. I don’t want to run the risk of pooping my pants. HA
  • I also like the form of potassium in Redmond’s, citrate, compared to Ultima’s, aspartate, for my needs.
  • There is more potassium and sodium in Re-Lyte Hydration, which can be hard for me to get in every day.
  • I love the source of the sodium that Redmond Real Salt uses, as there are extra minerals in there. Plus it tastes better than sodium chloride.

Taste Difference

I purchased the Lemon Lime flavors of both brands and tried them both. Hands down I loved Redmond’s Relyte Hydration the best. I added the recommended amount of water to each of the brands and made sure they were well mixed.

I could not stand the Liquid IV mix. It was almost too tart and not sweet enough. It doesn’t sound bad if you typically like that, but the flavor also gave a weird aftertaste.

This is just my take on the flavor though, there are other reviews out there where the person has liked the flavor from the sugar-free Liquid IV.

Remond’s Lemon Lime is more of a smooth and lightly sweet taste compared to Liquid IV’s Lemon Lime. I’ve also tried all the flavors from Redmond’s and enjoy them all.

7 Re-Lyte Flavors

The newest flavors are on top of this list. Mango and Strawberry Lemonade came out in July of 2021. The first flavors were Unflavored, Lemon Lime, and Mixed Berry.

  1. Mango
  2. Strawberry Lemonade
  3. Pina Colada
  4. Watermelon Lime
  5. Lemon Lime
  6. Mixed Berry
  7. Unflavored

How do Re-Lyte Electrolytes Taste?

One of the most important factors in purchasing a drink mix is how good it will taste for you. Below are descriptions to give you the best idea without trying them yourself.

For all of the options, I would say they are not overbearing in the sweet department compared to some other brands, like Gatorade with sugar.

For the flavors with some coconut water powder, it provides a little citrus flavor as well.

All of the flavors are also pretty salty. If you are not on a keto diet, you may find them too salty.

After being keto for more than 2 years and adding salt to everything, I find the saltiness the perfect amount. Heck, I could even add more salt to them.

Unflavored: Unflavored is best described as salty. Without any flavor to it, it’s just like saltwater but with extra minerals that you can’t taste.

Mango: This flavor provides a good true flavor to what mango tastes like.

Strawberry Lemonade: It’s a good even mix of strawberry and lemonade flavors. The taste is light and refreshing.

Pina Colada: This is like a salty pina colada that’s not creamy. Still very refreshing on a hot day though. When you compare the sweetness to the mixed berry, the pina colada is a little sweeter.

Watermelon Lime: When I first tried this to pick out the flavors better, I thought it tasted like a sweet berry lime but has more lime flavor than the watermelon.

Then the second time I tried it while picking out the flavor notes, I got a good mix. No one flavor shined through more.

This flavor is a little less sweet compared to the Pina Colada.

Lemon Lime: This flavor is similar to the lemon-lime flavor from Gatorade. It has a good mix of lemon and lime flavor equally.

I tried to see if I could tell if one flavor was stronger than the other, but I couldn’t.

Mixed Berry: Mixed berry gives a light berry taste. This one tastes less sweet compared to Pina Colada and Watermelon Lime.

No Junk Ingredients

I really like how this product has no extra fillers that are not needed and the ingredients are what people say are “clean.” I personally hate using the clean word.

There is no sugar, no artificial sweeteners, or flavorings.

Ingredients

Below is a list of what’s in the Unflavored Option

  • Redmond Real Salt
  • Potassium Citrate
  • Magnesium Malate
  • Magnesium Glycinate
  • Chloride

Additional Flavored Mix Ingredients

Everything that’s in the unflavored mix is also in the flavored electrolyte mixes. This list provides what’s also in the flavored varieties.

  • GMO-free citric acid
  • stevia leaf extract (rebaudioside A)
  • Coconut Water Powder
  • Calcium Lactate
  • Flavorings for each Mix
    • Mango: natural mango flavor and natural flavors
    • Strawberry Lemonade: Lemon lime flavors, natural strawberry flavor, and natural flavors

Common Ingredient Questions

Is Re-Lyte gluten-free and non GMOs?
Re-Lyte electrolyte mixes are both gluten-free and have no GMOs.

Why does Re-Lyte contain coconut water powder?
Answer directly from Redmond Life: “Coconut water powder provides an abundance of 5 electrolytes that are known to support hydration: sodium, magnesium, calcium, potassium, and phosphorus. Coconut water is also a very good source of B-complex vitamins such as riboflavin, niacin, thiamin, pyridoxine, and folates. Restores hydration and replenishes electrolytes.”

Electrolytes and Amounts

Some electrolyte powders that are great for keto only have the 3 main electrolytes (sodium, potassium, and magnesium), such as LMNT, but Re-Lyte from Redmond’s Life has 2 more.

The newer flavors of Mango and Strawberry Lemonade have different amounts of nutrients compared to the others. You can see this on the nutrition label.

I reached out to the company and asked why there was a difference in amount between the new and previous flavors.

They informed me that the previous flavors were measured with a heaping scoop and the 2 newer flavors were a level scoop.

So technically, they provide the same amount of nutrients, it will just depend on how you measure. 🙂

This is the back of the Watermelon Lime Flavor.

Lemon Lime, Watermelon Lime, Pina Colada Flavors, and Unflavored

  • 1000 mg Sodium
  • 500 mg Potassium
  • 60 mg Magnesium
  • 1585 mg Chloride
  • 75 mg Calicium (There is no calcium in the unflavored option.)

Mango and Strawberry Lemonade Flavors

  • 810 mg Sodium
  • 400 mg Potassium
  • 50 mg Magnesium
  • 1280 mg Chloride
  • 60 mg Calicium (There is no calcium in the unflavored option.)

How to Mix to Dissolve Well

This electrolyte mix drink was made with 20 oz of water. As you can see the result is mostly clear. This is true for all of the flavors.
  1. Once you have your water and mix in a bottle or cup, wait for 30 seconds before shaking or mixing.
  2. Now go ahead and mix it.
  3. If needed wait again for 10 seconds and shake again.
  4. You may see some sediment at the bottom but that is just a small amount of the minerals.

If I use a glass, I like to mix it with my Zulay’s milk frother.

Great for Fasting

The unflavored mix is perfect for fasting or if you are on a carnivore diet.

All of the mixes are great to use to avoid the dreaded keto flu as well, due to the electrolytes in the mix your body needs when eating a keto diet. The flavored mixes all have 5 calories.

More Questions

Can you freeze it and use it as ice cubes, then eat the ice cubes?
Yes, you can freeze the Re-Lyte mixture into ice cubes and then freeze them later.

You could even make them into gummies as I did with this electrolyte gummies recipe.

How many scoops do you need for 1 gallon of water?

If you use 20 ounces of water for 1 scoop, you will need 6.4 scoops for 1 gallon of water.

1 gallon of water is 128 oz. So the math looks like this:128/20=6.4.

Or for other concentrations:

  • 128/24=5.3 scoops
  • 128/16=8

As a general rule, you will use 20 oz to 24 oz of water for one scoop of the mix, according to the package. I personally like it best with 16 ounces of water, but everyone is different.

Can you buy single-serve portions?
Yes, you can buy single-serve portions of these electrolyte mixes. They currently have a variety pack of the first 5 flavors, where you get each of one flavor. You can also purchase just one packet.

Or you can get a 30-pack of one flavor. These options are only available for the first 5 flavors they have produced so far. Remember to use code KKN15 for 15% off.

How far is the expiration date typically on the product?
The best by date is for 2 years.

How long does it stay good to drink after mixing?
I have kept the mix in the fridge for at least a week and it was still good to drink.

Will Re-Lyte electrolyte mix help with muscle cramps?
Yes, re-Lyte will help with muscle cramps.

As a general rule muscle cramps are caused by a lack of hydration and low electrolyte levels such as potassium, sodium, and calcium.

This electrolyte mix will provide these nutrients to your body when mixed in water.

Is there caffeine?
There is no caffeine in these Re-Lyte mix powders from Redmond’s.

If you use code KKN15, you will get 15% off all Redmond’s products.

3 Days of no Cooking While Camping

Day 1

Breakfast: Coffee or tea with heavy whipping cream. Precooked bacon and hardboiled eggs. You can often find hard boiled eggs at grocery stores or a gas station. I also love Pederson’s precooked bacon.

Lunch: Make a lettuce wrap with deli meat, cheese and mayo. Try some turkey with cheddar cheese or roast beef and swiss cheese.  Deli meats and pre-sliced meats and cheese brands that I like are Boar’s Head. This is a cleaner and better for you company compared to other cheap lunch meats.

Dinner: Cold Nachos. Pork Rinds, with sour cream, shredded cheese, sliced green or any onion, chopped tomatoes, and olives. Brands of pork rinds that are love are Epic, and 4505 Chicharrones. Another brand loved by others that I have not been able to try yet are these Pork Clouds.

Day 2

Breakfast: Coffee or tea with butter and heavy whipping cream.

Lunch: Cold pesto pasta. Okay stay with me and just try it. Pre spiral your zucchini before you leave or buy it already sprialized. Some stores have it. Then toss some pesto on there. Then for some protein add some precooked chicken. Some stores also have this. Or you could precook this at home.

Dinner: Make a BLT with that precooked bacon. Load it up with mayo and bacon. Or even add some deli meat to this and or cheese.

Day 3

Breakfast: Fatty coffee or tea. Have some precooked bacon or hardboiled eggs.

Lunch: Plain unsweetened kite hill almond yogurt. Add some seeds or nuts such as pecans, walnuts, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, chia seeds. Add some liquid monk fruit sweetener to the mix. Use a nonflavored drop or try out the chocolate or lemon one.

Dinner: Grab Bag/Kitchen Sink dinner. Get an assortment of noncook keto foods. Hard salami, cheese, low carb veggies, olives, cheese chips such as Bunker Hill Crunchy Cheese Crisps, sliced up avocado, nuts, seeds, pickles, lower carb jerky. Can you think of anything else? I’m sure I left out a lot of items here.

Summary

I understand that these meal ideas seem pretty basic and you are correct. Sometimes people just draw blanks in their heads when it comes to meal plans and then toss in the no cooking variable. It can get pretty stressful.

This is one reason why I wanted to create this no cook keto camping meal plan. Life, vacation, and keto do not have to be hard. When life gets stressful for me, I go back to basics and keep it simple. It doesn’t always have to be fancy.

The Ground Meat
The original recipe calls for ground pork. However, beef and even chicken will also work. Ground turkey would also do the job. Depending on what meat you choose the macronutrient content will vary.

For example, if using ground chicken breast, the loaf will be leaner compared to using ground pork.

Pork Rind Options
There are pork rinds out there that are flavored. This recipe calls for your basic non-flavored variety. However, feel free and experiment with flavors.

You can find pork rinds that come pre-crushed or you can crush them yourself. If I’m feeling lazy I will use the pre-crushed kind. This makes cleaning and life just that much easier. The pre-crushed kind could cost more though, so keep that in mind.

Here is the zero bread loaf made with chicken, so it may be lighter in color than yours before cooking.

Video Instructions

Jonathan the maker of this recipe made biscuits out of the no-carb bread at Robert’s house. The video below shows him making this zero-carb bread. The time mark is from 14:30 to 18 minutes

The video is taken from Keto Savage Sport’s library on YouTube

Jonathan Shane is the person to thank for this recipe.

Reviews

Those who have made this no-carb bread have loved it.

Eat_breathe_keto on Instagram made this bread. She couldn’t even wait to taste it before she took a bite.

Sarahbenn8 loved this no-carb bread so much, she has it on her story highlights on her Instagram page.

Adriennegustafson over on Instagram has made this pork rind bread with chicken and absolutely loves it. In fact, the photos in this post are hers. ????

Common Questions

Does the keto bread taste eggy?
Unlike some keto bread out there, this bread is not eggy at all.

Texture
This pork rind bread is also pretty dense, not your usual keto bread recipes that can come out soggy and eggy.

The Flavor
It can give off the flavor of the meat you choose to use for this recipe.

Adrienne used chicken in making this recipe. She stated that when you pair this pork rind bread with lunch meat or even use it for a grilled cheese sandwich, the chicken flavor is mostly covered up.

Grilled cheese sandwich made with the carnivore and pork rind bread.

Could I make biscuits?
As can be seen in the video above, Jonathan creates biscuits out of this bread recipe. So, feel free to make those instead of the bread loaf if you wish.

Storage

Once the bread has cooled. Place it in an airtight container and keep it in your fridge for up to 7 days. You can also store the bread in your freezer.

If you choose to put some loaves in the freezer, pre-slice it and put parchment paper between each slice. Doing this will make it easier for you to take slices at a time.

Since writing this recipe, I have a few more posts you may be interested in reading.

Looking for the best lowest carb bread recipe? Stop searching and make this carnivore bread recipe with pork rinds and 2 more ingredients. NO eggy taste either and toasts up perfectly!

Instructions

1. Preheat the oven to 375F.

2. Separate the eggs and beat the whites until stiff peaks form.

3. Next crush your pork rinds into a fine powder. ( I used a food processor )

4. Take egg yolks and combine with ground meat. A food processor or blender also works great here.

5. Add in half the egg whites to the mixture and blend.

6. After blended together, remove from the blender into a large bowl and fold in the rest of the egg whites. The batter will be lighter and bouncier.

7. Add in crushed pork rinds and FOLD in until the batter starts to thicken.

8. Place in a loaf pan and bake at 375’F for 50-60 mins or until it starts to brown.

3 Ingredient Keto Egg Loaf | Perfect French Toast

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

The magnificent keto egg loaf recipe! This recipe has blown up all over Instagram & rightly so. It’s super simple & incredibly delicious.

The best way to eat this is having it fried in some butter on the stove top, after it’s finished in the oven. Perfect keto french toast, in my opinion.

There are variations of this recipe and I tried my very best to find them all. I have them shown below the recipe card.

Total Time:

The keto egg loaf recipe is a huge hit in the keto and low carb community. Fry it in butter after it’s done cooking and it will taste like the most glorious french toast.

Ingredients

  • 8 oz cream cheese
  • 8 eggs
  • 4 T melted butter
  • 6 T Coconut Flour (Optional)
  • 1 tsp Baking Powder (Optional)

Instructions

  1. Put cream cheese, melted butter and eggs (and optional ingredients) into a bowl.
  2. Blend until smooth and liquid.
  3. If you remember I would take the butter and cream cheese out of the fridge and allow them to reach room temperature.
  4. Pour into a baking bread dish or any dish you want. Spray with some oil or use parchment paper for easy release.
  5. Bake at 350 F for 15-30 minutes. The time will depending on how big your creation is and how done you want to make it. Less time will make it more like flan.
  6. Enjoy with any toppings you like.

Notes

To cook the egg loaf as the photo you see on the recipe card, use the optional ingredients. “MamaKetoCooksRealFood” used these additional ingredients to make it more like friend toast.
Then, fry it in butter after you slice the loaf.

The Creation

Samatha, keto.sam.iam, on Instagram first made this recipe and shared it on her Instagram account. Since then, it’s become a hit. She, however, did not come up with the recipe itself exactly. She just changed how the ingredients were cooked.

What I mean by this is that she took the cream cheese pancake recipe that’s been online for a while and placed it into a bread pan and cooked it this way instead of making pancakes. BRILLIANT!

Edited on 9/25/18: I recently learned that this original recipe did not originally come from All Day I Dream About Food. I just remembered that Sam mentioned that she found it on her site. Go check out her site though, she’s got some great treats on there.

Keto Egg Loaf made with some coconut flour.

The Basic Egg Loaf / Soggy French Toast Recipe

The described recipe below is just the basic version of this egg loaf. I used 4 tablespoons of butter, while others use 8 tablespoons.

Some do no use sweetener, some use sweetener. I really enjoyed using liquid monk fruit sweetener in mine.

The monk fruit drops currently have vanilla, chocolate, lemon and regular for their flavors. One of the best things about these liquid drops is that they give you zero carbs, unlike erythritol. Add a little bit at a time and test the sweetness as you go for your own personal liking.

Variations From Instagram

Mama Keto Cooks Real Food

She used the original recipe but then added 6 tablespoons of coconut flour, 1 teaspoon of baking powder, 1 teaspoon of vanilla and some cinnamon.

To cook this one though is slightly different. She cooked it for 45 minutes on the same heat setting.

She sadly no longer has an Instagram account.

keto.ninfem/Rebecca

Rebecca started adding 1/8 teaspoon of baking powder for each serving. For example, 1 egg, 1 tablespoon butter and 1 ounce of cream cheese and 1/8 teaspoon of baking powder. By doing this, the loaf does not deflate as much.

She also likes adding vanilla extract to her creations. One creation was a banana walnut loaf. She added in 1/8 tsp vanilla extract, 1/8 tsp banana extract, a dash of cinnamon, and 1/4 C walnuts.

Ketoculinarystuff (Keto Culinary Stuff)

He made this really good looking mocha flavor. He made the original recipe but then added 2 tablespoons of cocoa powder, 1/4 cup dark roast coffee, and 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract.

Chocolate Keto Egg Loaf with Berries.

More Flavor Combinations

By using other extracts, this treat can take on other favorite flavors. Some extra flavor ideas: strawberry, raspberry, cherry, coffee, mint, caramel, rum, coconut, and pistachio.

Finishing Touches

Once the loaf is finished cooking in the oven, slice the loaf and fry up the slices in butter! Or heck, try using coconut oil. Fried french toast? Yes, please!

Then get some keto syrup and cover that french toast. People have enjoyed the syrups from Lakanto and ChocZero. Oh, you can’t forget about the whipped cream either. Get creative and add different flavors to that whipped cream too!

Add-in Ideas to Try

  • Cocoa Powder
  • shredded Unsweetened Coconut
  • Pumpkin Pie Spice
  • Berries
  • Nuts such as Pili Nuts
  • Banana Extract, which is what I used in my Banana Bread recipe.

Feta Cheese Crisps – Keto Keuhn Nutrition

These feta cheese crisps came to light all because some of my feta cheese fell into another area of my dish of food in the microwave.

The feta that was by itself became crispy like a chip and I loved it. No need to make cheese crisps in the oven anymore!

Recipe Tips

If you want a thicker crisp, use 10 grams of feta or somewhere between 5-10 grams of feta. I found that when I did the 10 grams, cooking between 6 to 7 minutes worked well.

The photos below used both sizes. The cooking times may also vary depending on the mold size you use.

Potassium

If you are eating keto, you know that you need potassium. Herbs can be one place to get them. Basil is one of those herbs that contain potassium.

In fact, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, there are 7 dried herbs that are high in potassium. These are chervil, coriander, parsley, basil, dill weed, tarragon, and turmeric (1). Dried basil has 2,630 mg of potassium per 100 grams (2).

Instructions

  • Cut feta into 5g squares or rectangles. Does not have to be perfect

  • Place feta into silicon muffin liners (you can just a plate too, if needed. The end result will be different).

  • Sprinkle dried basil on top of feta.

  • Place into microwave and cook for about 3 minutes or until crisp. Time may vary as each microwave is different. You may also like them not as crispy.

Keto Almond Joy Cookies – Keto Keuhn Nutrition

These keto coconut and chocolate cookies are easy to make and are full of coconut flavor. You do not need any type of flour for these low-carb almond joy cookies either.

The best part of these is that 1 cookie has less than 2 total carbs!

Jump to:

Sweeteners

If you don’t have the monk fruit drops that I use in these keto almond joy cookies, it’s okay. You can also use stevia drops.

You may also use a bulk sweetener, such as erythritol. I just leave these out to keep the total carbs low as possible. Start with 2 tablespoons of this sweetener and adjust to you taste preference. If you count net carbs, you subtracts these carbs from the total.

If you do use a granular keto sweetener, reduce the cooking time by a few minutes. Reducing the time will help avoid the cookies from burning.

Substitutions and Additions

If you wanted to leave out the cocoa powder in these chocolate cookies, you can. Then toss in some keto chocolate chips to keep them a true keto almond joy cookie.

Tips and Directions

For best results you will want to have your egg at room temperature. To do this, place your cold egg in a bowl and just add hot water to it. The egg only needs a few minutes in the water to be ready.

For easy removal of the finished coconut and chocolate cookies, place a sheet of parchment paper on the cookie sheet. My favorite is using silicon cooking mats though instead of parchment paper. You only have to buy them once.

Grind up the coconut shreds with a coffee grinder or use the Magic Bullet with the more fanned out blade. You will need to do small batches of grinding up the shredded coconut.

This is what the ground up coconut and cocoa powder will look like.

If you are not able to grind up your shredded coconut, that will be fine. The texture will just be different but still delicious!

This is the what the finished batter looks like for the keto almond joy cookies.

To grind your coconut I really like using Magic Bullet with the flat blade option. If you don’t have this tool, I’ve also used our coffee bean grinder.

Keep these in an airtight container in your fridge for up to a week. They can also last as long as 3 months in the freezer.

If you keep them in the freezer get a freezer-safe bag to put them in and try your best to remove most of the air. I like to suck it out with a straw.

    better.
  2. Once your butter is melted, mix in the

  3. Add your egg to the butter mixture and
whisk until combined. It may thicken a little

    This is fine.
  4. Add and mix in your cocoa powder to the

    your wet ingredients.
  5. To harden the batter some, I put it back in
